Grain Free Fish Cat Food
What Every Cat Owner Should Know About Grain Free Fish Cat Food
There is plenty of fear mongering around surrounding the inclusion of types of carbohydrate including the humble ingredient grain in pet foods, and the so-called detrimental effects of these ingredients. Some of these ill-founded “rumours” suggest that carbohydrates and grains are linked to taurine deficiency, DCM, obesity and diabetes, to name a few.
The suggestion that the domestic cat should not be fed carbohydrates or grains is untrue. Whilst they should never be fed an unbalanced diet, or a vegetarian diet, cats have evolved to ingest and digest these ingredients. Whilst there may be no real essential requirement in both canine, feline, and human nutrition for carbohydrate and grains, they remain a valid energy contributor to all of these species.
The Real Cause of Feline Health Issues
Science has now confirmed the vast majority of inflammatory response disorders, plus many other diseases are the end result of negative changes to the gut microbiome, with poorly balanced diets being the most common cause. This situation has developed regardless of whether grains have been included or not within the food. A healthy cat food refers to the balance of essential nutrients and to the level of functional ingredients that are essential to feeding a diverse and robust gut microbial population.
How Cats Evolved Alongside Humans
Evolution has deemed it that both the domestic cat and dog, who has coevolved alongside humans, have developed a strong interdependency link to their human servants. Dogs managed to do this as a scavenger and an opportunistic omnivore, whilst cats have remained a true obligate carnivore whilst performing their required employment skills as “chief vermin control”.
Felis Catus refined their evolutionary employment skills by relocating their competencies to new locations such as human storage establishments, such as homes, farms, barns, and silos, or anywhere else where vermin inconveniently stole food, grains and fodder. It was a mutually beneficial relationship for both us and cats, as they were drawn to living beside us as convenient “rodent control” of these pesky rodents, and rabbits, which were stealing both ours and our livestock’s food, being predominately grain.
Please note the above that cats ingested predigested grains from the vermin they were hunting.
Cats as Natural Pest Controllers Throughout History
This highly adaptive feline proved to be an efficient vermin exterminator, and a pivotal point for our survival just by reducing diseases spread by vermin. In fact, one of the most fatal pandemics in history, the “Black Plague” or “Bubonic Plague” was believed to have been kept at bay until it was suddenly escalated by the culling of cats. This allowed the previously controlled rodent population to breed and spread one of the most devastating diseases ever recorded.
During this remarkable evolutionary co-dependency, humans also used cats for rodent control upon sailing ships. These voyages took much longer than today’s cruises and could last anywhere from weeks to years, as speed was dependent upon the prevailing winds. A good hunting cat, and often her kittens (as it is the mother that teaches her kittens to hunt), would always be kept safe onboard out of sheer necessity.
Why Fish-Based Cat Food Makes Evolutionary Sense
Keep in mind that when it comes to evolution, “Mother Nature” is in control, not humankind. When food resources ran low on board, cats were able to ingest and digest the fish captured upon these ships, following the depletion of rodent resources.
This is where careful consideration has been given surrounding the LifeWise cat food that has been selected to be the grain free dry cat food, in our Fish formulation. Fish just simply don’t ingest grains and this has enabled cats to also digest prey without grains. Subsequently, this is reason our fish formulation has emerged as a grain free diet.
Choosing the Right Formula for Your Cat
Whilst considering the appropriate formulation for your animal, keep in mind that “Mother Nature” equipped your animal for survival, not fear mongering from the internet or unsolicited advice from “well meaning” people. Consider not only what your cat will ingest, but more importantly what your cat’s prey would ingest. The health, diet and wellbeing of the prey is just as important to our domestic animals as are quality ingredients the key to a superior product.
